|Statement from KDE Science Consultants
|Kentucky's standards for science continue to be the Program of Studies (2006) and the assessed science content standards continue to be Core Content for Assessment, version 4.1. These standards are incorporated into the current version of the KCAS standards. The grade 4 and grade 7 science K-PREP assessments for 2012-2013 will be constructed to assess these standards. These are the same standards that have been used to guide Kentucky's science assessment since 2006 and they are available at http://www.education.ky.gov/KDE/Instructional+Resources/Curriculum+Documents+and+Resources/Core+Content+for+Assessment/Core+Content+for+Assessment+4.1/
Kentucky is a Lead Partner state in the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), but those standards do not yet exist. A first public draft was available to review in May, but this draft has since been removed from the NGSS website. Achieve, the organization developing the NGSS, is currently in the process of analyzing feedback and revising the NGSS accordingly. Schools and districts are cautioned that the next draft version of the NGSS anticipated in the fall of 2012 may be significantly different than the first draft. Achieve anticipates the Next Generation Science Standards will not be completed until December, 2012 or perhaps early 2013.
Current information on the status of the NGSS is always available at http://www.nextgenscience.org and Kentucky's NGSS page can be found at http://www.education.ky.gov/kde/instructional+resources/curriculum+documents+and+resources/next+generation+science+standards.htm
